9 Ways to Ease Anxiety

Did you know that improving your happiness will help you improve your career?  After all, a happy employee is a productive employee.

If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands.  Yeah, not very many people are clapping right now.  Cue: awkward silence.  The stress of the pandemic is getting to us.  The inability to travel.  The inability to send our kids to school.  The inability to run into the store on a whim.  The list goes on.

With anxiety an at all time high, I’ve created a list of some of the things you can do to improve your endorphins and make your little corner of the world a happier place.  Some of these are tips that others have shared with me and all are things that I have tried myself.

  1. Explore nature. Go for a walk, throw a frisbee, play golf, learn to paddle boat…. The options are endless and it’s good to get some fresh air.  I recently discovered “30 hikes at 30 parks” for our local area, so I bet they have something similar near you, too.  For us, it’s also been a good way to get the kids off of their devices.
  2. Become a yogi. While I’m not one to sit still, yoga has calming effects that can lessen stress that will last all day.
  3. Exercise. Going to the gym may not be an option right now, but you can work out at home with the Peloton app or track your movement with the Apple Watch.  Get your kids involved… mine love GoNoodle, but I can’t promise the songs won’t get stuck in your head.
  4. Try deep breathing. Navy Seal’s use a technique called box breathing. Simply breathe in for four seconds, then hold the air in your lungs for four seconds.  Next, exhale for four seconds and hold your breath for four seconds.  Repeat ten times.
  5. Keep a gratitude journal. Some people prefer to meditate, but I prefer to keep a list (in a journal) about things I appreciate. While I don’t write it in it every day, I try to get my family on board with positivity.  I find that my positive energy can be shared with others.
  6. Bring in experts. A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog post about questions to ask when hiring a nanny.  Click here to read all about it.  There are plenty of ways to outsource, from using tools for everyday tasks, to hiring employees and everything in between.
  7. Pamper Yourself. After a long day, I enjoy massages once a month from my favorite masseuse.  I’ve now introduced my mom to her, and my mom introduced her to all of her friends… so she’s harder to make an appointment with these days.  I’m not going out anyway.  So, invest in some massage tools that make you feel like you’re at the spa.
  8. Stay organized. “A dream is a goal with a deadline” – Napoleon Hill.  There are many ways to make a plan, and you can certainly start with time saving tools.  Create a list with the ability to update it before you go to bed.  It helps me sleep better at night.  Stay tuned, I’ll share more ways to plan in a future Mindshare Monday.
  9. Adopt a puppy. Ok, unlike the others, this won’t save you time… and a puppy might be a challenge (i.e. now I must replace my new slippers).  While they’re certainly a lot of responsibility, they offer companionship like no other.
